IMPORTANT Directions and information

COCO TAN BAR

THE ULTIMATE SPRAY TAN CARE GUIDE

PRE • DURING • POST

Your glow starts before you arrive.
For the most even, natural-looking, long-lasting tan, please follow these instructions carefully.

BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT

PREP = YOUR BEST TAN

24–48 HOURS BEFORE

EXFOLIATE

Gently exfoliate your entire body 24–48 hours before your appointment.

Pay extra attention to:

  • Elbows
  • Knees
  • Ankles
  • Hands
  • Feet
  • Wrists
  • Dry patches
  • Areas where skin naturally becomes rough

Use a gentle exfoliating mitt, washcloth, or body exfoliant.

Avoid aggressive scrubbing. Over-exfoliating can leave your skin irritated and cause uneven color.

SHAVE

If you shave, wax, or use another hair-removal method, complete it at least 8–24 hours before your spray tan whenever possible.

Freshly shaved or waxed skin may be more sensitive and can affect how the solution develops.

THE NIGHT BEFORE

MOISTURIZE — THEN STOP

Keep your skin hydrated leading up to your appointment.

However, avoid applying heavy lotion immediately before your tan.

Your skin should be:
clean + dry + product-free

AVOID

Before your appointment, avoid:

  • Heavy body oils
  • Self-tanner
  • Gradual tanning lotion
  • Body makeup
  • Glitter
  • Heavy fragrance
  • Thick body butter
  • Oily scrubs

These products can create a barrier between your skin and the tanning solution.

THE DAY OF YOUR TAN

ARRIVE CLEAN & PRODUCT-FREE

Shower before your appointment if possible.

Come with clean skin and avoid applying:

  • Lotion
  • Body oil
  • Sunscreen
  • Perfume
  • Deodorant
  • Makeup on areas being sprayed
  • Body makeup
  • Self-tanner
  • Heavy skincare products

Quality First

Exception: Follow any specific instructions provided by your Coco Tan Bar tanning professional.

WHAT TO WEAR

BEFORE YOUR TAN

Wear something loose, dark, and comfortable.

Ideal:

  • Oversized T-shirt
  • Loose sweats
  • Loose dress
  • Dark-colored clothing
  • Flip-flops or loose shoes

Avoid immediately after your tan:

  • Tight leggings
  • Skinny jeans
  • Tight bras
  • Tight underwear
  • Socks
  • Compression clothing
  • Tight waistbands
  • Light-colored clothing

Friction can cause unwanted rubbing or transfer before your tan develops.

DURING YOUR APPOINTMENT

YOUR COCO TAN BAR EXPERIENCE

Your tanning professional will guide you through the process.

You may be asked to:

  1. Prepare your skin
  2. Apply barrier protection where needed
  3. Position your body in specific ways
  4. Turn according to instructions
  5. Move your arms and legs into different positions
  6. Allow the solution to dry/set before dressing

FOLLOW POSITIONING INSTRUCTIONS

Proper positioning helps create an even application across:

  • Arms
  • Legs
  • Torso
  • Back
  • Hands
  • Feet
  • Face
  • Neck

Your technician may make adjustments to help create a natural-looking result.

DURING YOUR TAN

Expert Care

IMPORTANT

Your initial color is not your final color.

Spray-tan color develops gradually.

Don't panic if you look darker, lighter, or different immediately after your appointment.

Your final result becomes clearer after the recommended rinse and development period.

RINSING YOUR TAN

YOUR RINSE IS IMPORTANT

Follow the rinse time specifically recommended by your Coco Tan Bar professional based on the solution used.

FIRST SHOWER

Use lukewarm water.

Allow the water to gently rinse away the cosmetic bronzer.

Avoid aggressively scrubbing your skin.

DO NOT

  • Use hot water
  • Scrub
  • Use an exfoliating mitt
  • Use a loofah
  • Shave during the first rinse
  • Use harsh soap
  • Use oil-based cleansers

AFTER RINSING

Gently pat your skin dry.

Do not rub.

Your tan may initially appear lighter after rinsing. This is normal because the temporary cosmetic bronzer is washing away while the developed color remains.

AFTER YOUR TAN

MOISTURIZE DAILY

Hydration is one of the biggest keys to maintaining your glow.

Apply a gentle, hydrating moisturizer regularly.

Focus on:

  • Arms
  • Legs
  • Elbows
  • Knees
  • Ankles
  • Hands
  • Feet

Dry skin sheds faster. Hydrated skin generally helps your tan fade more evenly.

KEEP YOUR GLOW LONGER

HANDS, FEET & FACE

SPECIAL AREAS NEED SPECIAL CARE

Hands, feet, elbows, knees, and other high-friction areas may naturally fade faster.

Wash your hands normally after your tan has developed, but avoid excessive scrubbing.

For your face:

Use gentle skincare and avoid aggressive exfoliating products if you want your facial color to last.

Strong exfoliating acids, retinoids, peels, and certain active skincare products can accelerate fading.

SHAVING AFTER YOUR TAN

Shaving may gradually remove some surface color.

To preserve your tan:

  • Wait until your tan has fully developed before shaving.
  • Use a gentle razor.
  • Avoid repeatedly shaving the same area.
  • Moisturize afterward.

EXFOLIATION

WHEN YOUR TAN IS READY TO COME OFF

Do not aggressively exfoliate while you are trying to preserve your tan.

When your tan is nearing the end of its life, gentle exfoliation can help prepare your skin for your next appointment.

This helps prevent:
patchy leftover color + uneven buildup + a poor canvas for your next tan.

HOW LONG WILL MY TAN LAST?

A spray tan commonly lasts approximately 5–10 days, depending on:

  • Skin type
  • Skin hydration
  • Exfoliation
  • Shower habits
  • Exercise
  • Swimming
  • Skincare products
  • Hair removal
  • Friction
  • Individual skin-cell turnover

Everyone's tan fades differently.

Your goal is a gradual, natural fade, not an abrupt disappearance

COMMON QUESTIONS

"Why did my tan look darker when I left?"

The cosmetic bronzer can make your skin appear darker immediately after application.

Your final developed color will become more apparent after the recommended rinse.

"Why did my tan get lighter after my shower?"

The temporary bronzer is washing away.

The developed tan remains underneath.

"Why are my elbows or knees darker?"

Dry areas can absorb more solution.

Proper exfoliation and hydration help minimize this.

"Why did my tan fade faster on my hands?"

Hands experience frequent washing, friction, and product exposure.

This naturally causes faster fading.

"Can I wear white?"

After your tan has fully developed and you've completed your first rinse, you can generally return to normal clothing.

During the initial development period, darker and looser clothing is recommended.

"Can I shower normally?"

Yes, after your recommended development period.

Use gentle products and avoid excessively hot water if you want your tan to last longer.

BEFORE A BIG EVENT

DON'T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE

For weddings, vacations, birthdays, photoshoots, vacations, parties, competitions, reunions, or special events:

Schedule your tan in advance.

This allows time to:

  • See how your color develops
  • Make adjustments if needed
  • Avoid last-minute stress
  • Coordinate your glow with your event
  • Follow the correct rinse and aftercare schedule

IMPORTANT

Do not experiment with a brand-new skincare, shaving, waxing, or tanning routine immediately before an important event.

SPRAY TAN SAFETY

A spray tan is a cosmetic color treatment and does not provide protection from UV rays.

A spray tan does not replace sunscreen.

Continue using appropriate SPF when exposed to the sun.

Avoid intentionally burning or overexposing your skin to achieve a darker tan.

Expert Care

AVOID EXCESSIVE EXPOSURE TO WATER & HEAT

To help extend your tan, limit:

  • Long hot showers
  • Hot baths
  • Saunas
  • Steam rooms
  • Hot tubs
  • Chlorinated pools
  • Excessive sweating

Water itself isn't the only issue — prolonged soaking, heat, chemicals, and friction can accelerate fading.

SWIMMING

Swimming can fade a spray tan faster.

Chlorine and salt water may contribute to faster fading.

If swimming is unavoidable:

Moisturize before entering the water and rinse your skin afterward.

Pat dry rather than aggressively rubbing with a towel.

WORKING OUT

Heavy sweating can contribute to faster fading.

If possible, avoid intense workouts during the initial development period.

After your tan has developed:

You can exercise normally, but remember that frequent sweating, showering, and friction may shorten the life of your tan.

CLOTHING & FRICTION

Friction can cause uneven fading.

Be mindful of:

  • Bra straps
  • Tight waistbands
  • Socks
  • Shoes
  • Tight leggings
  • Handbags rubbing against the body
  • Tight uniforms
  • Shaving
  • Frequent towel rubbing

Where possible, choose softer and looser clothing during the first several hours.
